Can you control how creative you are?

Hiring a designer costs money, but not everyone has the budget. Even my regular clients have bigger and smaller budgets for certain projects. I recently took on one of the smaller budget projects. The client was happy because they got a good designer for less money. But how did I work that out on my end? Did I create and work less?
In cases like these I offer to provide fewer design options upfront—so my client agreed to see one design instead of two or three. The key word is "see." I still designed three options. I sent them two because I couldn't help myself! These three final ideas (created in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign) were pared down from about 15-20 variations that didn't make the cut.
There were times in the creative process where I was stuck. Other times I had so many ideas I couldn't "see" them in my mind fast enough to process them into sketch or layout. This is part of the normal process, and it needs space to happen.
There are tons of ways to stifle creativity...getting stuck in a boring routine, spending too much time consuming and not enough time seeking inspiration, ignoring the creative juices when they start to flow, and so much more. I found that my brain wants to be creative and that it's up to me to provide the time and space to do that. Are you creative in your field, whatever it is? I think you are. And it's up to you find the opportunity.
